Calculation of Pharmacists’ Continuing Education Hours

Pharmacists’ Continuing Education hours are calculated at a rate of 1.25 hours per month. Each cycle runs from November 1 of one odd year to October 31 of the following odd year. You are exempt from CE for the first 2 years after graduation only.

Example 1

If your license expires on October 31, 2009 and you graduated in June 2008, then you would be exempt from CE until June 2010 and would not owe any CE to renew your license.

Example 2:

If your license expires on October 31, 2009 and you graduated in May 2007, then you would calculate 1.25 hours per month from May 2009 until Oct 2009 – you would owe 7.5 hours.

Example 3:

If your license expires on October 31, 2009 and your graduation exemption period ends prior to November 1, 2007 then the calculation would be 1.25 hours per month from November 1, 2007 through October 31, 2009 – you would owe the full 30 hours.

Continuing Education Requirements

All pharmacists living or practicing in the state of Nevada are required to obtain one hour of approved Nevada law CE in order to renew their pharmacists license. These are the ways to obtain the Nevada Law CE:

  • Pharmacists can attend a live program where someone from the board is presenting the information. We will post those to the web site as we become aware of them.
  • Pharmacists can attend, in person, one full day of a board meeting to receive CE credit. In addition to the one hour of law, it will also provide three hours of acceptable Continuing Education. Certificates will be handed out at the end of the meeting and must be retained in your records as proof of attendance.
  • Pharmacists can take the free law CE program provided by the Nevada Board of Pharmacy (please refer to the above section labeled "Online Law Programs".

Continuing Education Requirements for Pharmaceutical Technicians and Pharmaceutical Technicians in Training

Pharmacy technicians living or practicing in NEVADA are required to complete one hour of an approved Nevada Law continuing education (CE) prior to renewal. A copy of the completed CE must be maintained at the pharmacy employing the pharmacy technician.

Pharmaceutical technicians-in-training are also required to complete one hour of an approved Nevada Law CE prior to renewal.

There has been confusion regarding CE requirements for pharmacy technicians. Nevada law requires that if you are employed in a Nevada pharmacy, you must complete 12-hours of in-service training during the 2-year period immediately preceding the renewal of your registration. Your managing pharmacist must approve and maintain a written record of your training and those records are to be maintained in the pharmacy and will be checked during the annual pharmacy inspection. A pharmacy technician may use the CE hours completed for recertification by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board as their 12-hours of in-service training required during the 2-year period immediately preceding the renewal of registration. Should this option be chosen, documentation must be maintained in the pharmacy for inspection. The Nevada Law CE may NOT be substituted by any other program. DO NOT SEND YOUR RECORDS TO THE BOARD WITH YOUR RENEWAL FORM.
